Year In Review

Wow...another year is over. Hard to believe, isn't it? 2006 was a huge year at my house. Here's a quick recap:

January: Doug got a new job.

February: Doug turned 25.

March: We celebrated our 2 year anniversary! And nephew Kaden was born.

April: I finally heard from you after several months of non-communication and Doug & I started seriously thinking about buying a house.

May: Was pretty boring, nothing exciting happend.

June: Doug was the best man in Aaron & Lindsey's wedding. Such a beautiful wedding and Doug gave a great best man speech!

July: We bought our house! We closed 4 days before my birthday.

August: I turned 26 and realized I was officially closer to 30 than I was 20...what a depressing thought.

September: We went on vacation! I flew to Wisconsin to visit you & Josh and Doug flew to Dallas to stay with Ronnie & Corey.

October: More vacation. This time I rode the Amtrak to Hermann, MO with my mom, my aunt, & my grandma. We had a great time tasting wine and shopping.

November: Let's see, Thanksgiving, we cut down our Christmas tree for the first time, nothing much else.

December: Was just crazy! Not only did we have the holidays, we also bought a new (to us) truck for Doug and we got engaged! What a way to end the year. One more to add, just for Doug. The Chiefs made it to the playoffs!

HAVE A SAFE & HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

*and stay away from the pickle surprise!*

Rainy Saturday at Work

Why didn't you tell me that I would change my mind 50 million times before I could decide on a theme/color for my wedding? Not to mention that I keep waffling between having the big wedding and trying to keep things as small as possible? It's making me crazy and I know I'll spend the better part of my downtime today looking up more things wedding related. Doug told me this morning that the idea of going to Vegas is sounding better to him all the time. I told him that he's got to convince his mom it would be a good idea first. I think next weekend we're going to try to have a sit-down with the future in-laws and see if we can't hammer anything out.

Sunflowers

Did you know that sunflowers mean adoration? Me either! Why I care what they mean, I don't know. I'm sure I'd be the only one (and now you) who would know. So I think you were on to something with the sunflower thing, I do really love them. I just don't want it to get too hoedown-ish, if you know what I mean.

Beverage Alert!!!

Do not, I repeat, do not drink anything while reading the post below. If you don't heed this warning, you'll likely need a new keyboard.

My Ring Came In!

Doug's aunt swears she didn't have it overnighted, but I'm pretty sure she did. :) She's concerned about the diamond not being very secure though. I think I could take it somewhere and have extra prongs put on it or something. We're going to go pick it up tonight, so we'll see. We only have a week to return it so that's not much time to decide.

Five Reasons

Five Reasons to Have the Wedding Here

  1. Most of our friends and family are already here.
  2. We'll get more wedding presents. :)
  3. No worries about missed flights, forgetting things, etc.
  4. We'll have a real wedding.
  5. It doesn't really matter where we get married.

So, now I think Vegas has been shot down. Doug told his mom tonight that we were thinking about a wedding next year and when he mentioned Vegas she vetoed that idea. She made the point that there would be too many people who would want to see it, that wouldn't be able to travel with us (like grandparents). I know she's right. I also know that if we have a wedding here, it's going to snowball and get so out-of-control that we aren't going to be able to see straight. Anyway, we'll see what happens next.

P.S. I ordered my ring today and it should be in by Thursday or Friday, so you'll actually get to see it! :)

Carmen's Christmas Top 5

I've been listening to alot of Christmas music lately and have decided I have very distinct favorites. Here are my top 5 favorite Christmas songs!

5. I'll Be Home for Christmas (Bing Crosby)

4. O' Holy Night (Josh Groban)

3.
Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 (Trans-Siberian Orchestra)

2. All I Want for Christmas is You (Mariah Carey)

and finally...

1. White Christmas (Bing Crosby)

Can't wait till Friday!

I'm so excited that I get to see you on Friday. Friday!!! Yay!! We got your Christmas card today. So cute! I think it is my favorite card. I always love tiny cards. :) Tomorrow I'm going to talk to Doug's aunt about a certain piece of jewelry that I will wear on my left hand. *squeal!*
I'm in way too good of a mood tonight. :)

Going to the chapel...

Well, Doug & I talked about it a little more today and everything still seems to be a go. *crossing my fingers* I was looking around at some jewelry websites trying to compare the ring I picked out to things comprable and I'm thinking this must be the wholesale price, because most things comprable were way more expensive. My only other concern with the price was that maybe the diamonds aren't very good quality, but I don't think that his aunt would even suggest that we buy something that wasn't decent. I was just looking at the David's Bridal website and I have found another dress that I really like. What do you think?

Anyhow, I should get back to cleaning my house now. Talk to you soon!

Happy Anniversary!

Just wanted to wish you & Josh a Happy Anniversary today! I hope you have many more wonderful years of marriage ahead of you. :)

Also, I can take a half day off from work on Friday the 22nd. We could at least have lunch and do a little shopping or something. We'll have to figure out sometime we can all get together because when I mentioned to Doug that you guys were going to be in town, he really wanted to see you too. Do you want to see Desire & Angela? I could maybe plan a little something, or if you'd rather I'll just not mention it to them. I already am trying to cram too much into your short little visit, and I know you have other obligations. :) See you soon!

SOLD!

Doug sold his car this morning in what has to be the fastest turn around ever! He went to the News-Press yesterday and put the ad in, it came out in today's paper and we had people calling at 7:15 a.m. NO Kidding! He put in $900, but the people that bought it brought cash and he sold it for $700. That pretty much covers the taxes and fixing the heater thing, so we're in pretty good shape right now. :)

Money, money, money!

My dad is getting a new truck today. He finally found one that likes as well as his truck and decided to go through with it. We're reaping the benefits, because he is selling his truck to us for what he would have gotten for trade in value. :) He could have sold to anyone on the street for probably $3000 more. Yay for us! And we got a loan through the credit union, that Doug actually gets to be on. More yays! Our interest rate sucks, but we've got to start somewhere, right? Anyhow, we're going to the credit union today to sign the loan papers and will probably have the truck tomorrow unless my dad decides to be nice and go ahead and give it to us today. But all of this comes with a price, right? Doug is now freaking out about the money. And I don't blame him. Of course, I'm getting a little irritated that he's blaming it all on me. He says I spend too much money. And while I don't go out and spend a huge amount all the time, I know I'm very guilty of buying a little something here and little something there, and by the time it is all said and done I've probably spent just as much doing that as I would going on shopping sprees every paycheck. So I'm going to work on that. I'm also going to work on paring down our grocery bill. We're spending way more than necessary at the store every 2 weeks. The one time I did really well was the time I planned our meals, made a very extensive list and then only bought what was on the list. I think I spent $103 that time. Not bad for 2 weeks of groceries for 2 people. Anyhow, back to the truck thing. I'm really excited and I know Doug is too. It'll be so nice to have a truck too. No more trying to find someone to haul stuff for us or borrowing someone else's vehicle. We'll be self-sufficient now! :) I'll try to remember to take pictures of Doug with his truck and post them later!

Hey Santa!

So since Doug picked out all of his Christmas presents over the weekend it has been decided that I will also be picking out my own Christmas gift(s) this year. After some careful thought, I have decided that I'd like some jewelry. Nothing fancy. Just something simple that I can wear often. I think a necklace would be my best bet or some diamond stud earrings. I mentioned the idea of jewelry to Doug and you should have seen the look of horror on his face. Apparently he is petrified of buying jewelry. He's afraid he'll pick the wrong thing. Now I tried to tell him that most of what I would love about anything he gives me is just the fact that he picked it out for me, but he didn't believe it. So I've been showing him a few things and I have given him a few criteria for what I am looking for. "White gold, diamond pendant, NO HEARTS!" Sounds simple enough, right? Wrong! I've showed him this, which I really like, but it's a little more then we were planning to spend on Christmas. I've found several cheaper alternatives and we are also going to check out his aunt's store and see if she can't order something for us (mostly she just sells costume jewelry). Maybe if we get a good enough deal, I'll get matching earrings! *sigh* How did he miss out on the jewelry buying gene that his brother seems to have?? Becky has tons of great jewelry from Eric. Maybe Doug should just go shopping with him...

Score!

Thanks to my aunt, Doug & I spent yesterday in the basement of the woman who used to own the Sports Nutz store here in town. She had to close over the summer and now she's trying to get rid of her inventory and is selling everything 60% off. It's crazy, isn't it? We got a ton of stuff, well Doug mostly did, and for practically nothing. For $120 we bought:

*Patrick Surtain Jersey for Doug

*Chiefs Bathrobe for Doug

*MU Sweeatshirt for Doug

*Fitted Ball Cap for Doug

*Beanie/Stocking Cap for Doug

*Chiefs zip up sweatshirt for Me

*Chiefs Baby Outfit for Nate

*Chiefs Baby Outfit for Kaden

That may not sound like alot of stuff, but if you have ever bought sports apparel, then you know how much that stuff can cost full price. Jerseys are usually around $70 and the bathrobe was originally marked $80. So just for those two things alone, we got a great deal.

You'll notice that most of the things we picked up were for Doug. No, that's not a typo. He's crazy for Chiefs and even crazier for anything with Chiefs on it. So we decided to make this his Christmas from me. I was actually planning to buy him a jersey and a bathrobe, so he kind of spoiled all of that for me. Oh well, he had fun. And now I'm going to get to pick out my own Christmas presents, which I'm sure is what Doug would prefer anyway, either that or a super specific list with a map drawn of the stores and exactly where to find each item. This boy is a seriously bad shopper, when it comes to occasions for me. I learned a long time ago that if I'm not very specific, I may not get a gift at all. So that was our day yesterday. Oh, and we picked up outfits for his nephews Nate & Kaden for Christmas, so we just have his niece Sammy, and his other two nephews, Tyler & Chase to get now. We're just about done with shopping now. It feels pretty good.

Now I'm doing laundry and we have a graduation open house to go to this afternoon. It should be a good time. Then back home to maybe get something done around the house tonight. Doug doesn't go in until 11, so he should be able to help me out a little bit. We'll see how that goes.

Brain Dead

So I unlocked the doors to the library about 40 minutes late today. :( I was here on time, early in fact, but I came in the elevator lobby and forgot to open the front doors when I got up here! I guess I'm too excited about leaving early and eating lots of turkey tomorrow. Plus, I'm working by myself and when Amanda comes in at 1:00, I'm leaving. Doug's off until Monday night, so he's pretty excited. When he's not depressed about that stuff I told you about the other night. He's been so upset and even though it is scaring the crap out of me, I have been putting it aside, trying to comfort him.

Computer guy is here trying to work on the network. I'll post more later. :)

Okay it is later now. Amanda will be here in about half an hour and then I'm free!! :) I think I'm heading out to Hobby Lobby to pick up some Christmas decorations (50% off right now!) and then home to clean, clean, clean my house. Doug & I want to get everything cleaned and organized so we can sit back and enjoy the rest of our weekend and then maybe only have to do the basic surface stuff through Christmas. We've also got to rearrange the living room so we can find a spot for the Christmas tree and start putting out Christmas decorations. I realized the other day though that I just don't have that much stuff which is probably a good thing, but I really want more! Friday Doug & I are going to Pik-A-Pine to cut down our Christmas tree. I think it's going to be so much fun. I haven't done that since I was a kid and really there is nothing like a real Christmas tree. Well, I better log off now and do a little something productive before I leave. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Pictures!

Okay, it would take too long to post all of our pictures from the other night, but I did save them to a yahoo album. Enjoy!

Stressed!

So I did that thing last night where you write down all of your streses & worries right before you go to bed and it is supposed to help you sleep better. Well, I slept great, but I forgot that I took an allergy pill before going to bed first. So that was probably a factor. The only other thing I have to off of is that my jaw doesn't hurt this morning. When I was at the dentist a few weeks ago they told me that I was probably starting to get TMJ after I described my symptoms of jaw pain and my jaw feeling like it was going to pop. So they told me to try and do some relaxing/stress relieving things before bed and see how it works. Last night was the first time I really tried anything and that was just mainly because I was in a bad mood when I went to bed and didn't want that to interfere with my sleep. So I wrote down this list of all the things I was worried/stressed about, and not just the big stuff, little things too because sometimes it is the little things that keep me up at night more than the big ones.

The whole point of this rambly post is that I was going through the mail this morning and now have another stressful thing: a letter from my mortgage company claiming that our hazard insurance expired October 29 and that we must submit proof that we have had continuous coverage or they will assign coverage to us at a much higher rate than what we are currently paying....GRRR! First of all, we paid all of our homeowner's insurance for a year. Second of all, we only got our loan in July, so I know it can't be expired. Third of all, I really don't want to read that before having coffee in the morning. Fortunately I called our insurance agent and spoke to someone in his office who is supposed to be calling them for us. She didn't quite know what to think of all of this either. And so she will try to get it straightened out for us. I guess that's what we pay them for, right?

I hope this isn't going to be a precursor to how my day is going to go.

Story Time!

No Nano for me this year, but I am still writing. Here is more of my book, where I left off in August. (BTW, no internet connection yet -- it's a loooong story.)

-------------------------------

“Your Dad’s birthday is tomorrow.” Camille put more sugar into her coffee, stirring the brew into a mini tornado.

Olivia brought the mug back onto the table faster than she meant to. The dull clang brought the waitress over, who cleared their breakfast dishes away. She didn't want to talk about her father - didn't want to think about him either.

“I know he wasn’t there for you much, but he did love you, Livy.” She paused, taking a shaky drink of coffee. “Just didn’t know how to show it is all.” From the wounded look on Camille’s face, Olivia wondered if she blamed herself for that. She shouldn’t. Her Gran gave love freely, even to grandkids she hadn’t seen for eight years.

"Its fine, Gran, really. He was always on the road anyway. It doesn't matter." Please let it go, Olivia begged in her mind.

Camille pinned her with a sad look. Her soft face looked tighter than normal, the line around her lips was stark white against her flushed skin. "It's been three months since the accident. We're going to have to talk about it eventually."

"Why?!" Olivia slapped her hand on the table. Why did Gran have to bring this up now? After all of this time she had to bring it up on her birthday?

“Because you haven’t talked about it at all. You barely talk to anyone; you haven’t tried to make any friends. I know you must be angry; feeling guilty too I think…”

“No! I don’t feel guilty. Maybe if Dad hadn’t been on the road so often it never would have happened.” Olivia knew she was making a scene, but didn’t care. She could feel the heat of anger on her face. “But then, he wasn’t on the road all that much after all, was he?”

“Livy, I don’t think…”

“You weren’t there, Gran. You didn’t hear the way those reporters taunted me; mobbed our house. ‘Have you met your other Mom yet, Olivia?’ and ‘How could you not know that your Dad had another family?’ When I refused to answer them, they got even more evil. ‘Did those other people die because he was coming home to you?’ As if it were my fault he plowed into that bus!”

An old man in a blue plaid jacket turned to look at her from his swiveling seat at the counter. A few feet away, a waitress looked up from taking an order and locked eyes with Olivia, briefly, before turning her attention back to her customer.

Olivia slid out of the booth and ran to the door; she burst out into the frigid air which bit into her, sucking the warmth from her bones. Behind her, the diner’s door stuck open in the wind. She leaned against it heavily and the wind gave way, slamming the door hard against its frame with a violent tinkle of sleigh bells against glass. She walked to the corner before she realized she didn’t really want to leave the warm lights of the diner.

Why is it always gray here, Olivia wondered as she stood on the sidewalk, her arms crossed over her chest. In Denver the sun came out, even in the winter, on a regular basis. She’d been in Maine since late October and had seen the sun only once, maybe twice. Olivia had always pictured Maine, and her grandmother’s home, as the magical summer haven of her parents’ childhood. Blue skies and sea air. Brightly colored beach towels on sandy beaches packed with treasures swept in with the tide. When Olivia was very small, her mother used to tell her stories of adventures on Old Orchard Beach; the mean pranks she and her friends would pull on the tourists. Her mother would laugh as she told the stories, her eyes lighting up in a way they seldom did otherwise. Most of the stories hadn’t been very funny to Olivia, but she had loved hearing them and feeling close to the place that seemed so far removed from their landlocked home. Olivia closed her eyes against the bitter wind. From where she stood, she couldn’t smell the sea.

-------------------------
BACK TO CURRENT
-------------------------

Olivia fumbled frantically through the quilt. Where was it? She hadn't even touched the quilt since she put the rope ladder under it. The daylight was almost gone; the room filling with night.
A hushed voice floated up the stairwell, “I'll check upstairs.”

Abandoning hope of finding the missing rope ladder, Olivia ran on her tiptoes to the window. It wasn’t such a long drop. The roof of the back porch was just to the left of the window, the old gray asphalt-shingled platform her best prospect for escape. From there, if she jumped just right, she’d land atop her grandmother’s wild, untamed flower bed. Olivia was glad she hadn’t thought to weed it.

Bending down, she put her face to the gate of Ziggy’s cage. “It’s plan B, Zigs.” She undid the clasp and pulled open the gate. Ziggy sprung from his prison and galloped down the hall. Though she wanted to take Ziggy with her, Olivia knew she didn’t have time to figure out how. The squeaky steps gave away any stealth they attempted. They were close now.

The window stuck from the humidity of the night, it protested as she separated it from its frame. Olivia could feel her time running out. Subtly was not going to save her now. She heaved the window the rest of the way open and climbed outside, throwing one leg over the sash, then the other.

Dangling over the porch roof, her fingers clamped onto the window frame, Olivia froze, struck by doubt. What if she really hurt herself when she fell? What if she didn’t land on the porch roof? Her arms stretched with her weight and the wood casing creaked. Knowing she couldn’t afford to hesitate any longer, Olivia swung her body side to side creating the momentum she hoped would land her on her target. With a loud crack and a shot of adrenaline, Olivia fell. She landed on her side atop the porch roof, the wind knocked from her lungs, the white painted window trim still clutched in her hands. Her legs felt raw, the gritty surface of the cement shingles clawing at her bare skin as she pulled herself up. Had she screamed when she fell? She couldn’t remember now. Olivia dropped window trim on the roof, close to the house, scooting it under the eave to protect it from summer storms. I’ll fix it when I get back, she thought. For now, her Gran’s bedroom window would remain scarred; the old, unpainted siding beneath it exposed.

She didn't pause to take further stock of the situation. Her side aching from the fall, Olivia moved slowly down the sharp pitch of the roof to its lowest point, just above the height of the garden weeds. She dangled her feet over the edge, closed her eyes and let go. The ground was much closer than she anticipated and she landed hard on her feet, the momentum from the fall pushing her backward onto a spike of yellow tulips. Instantly she knew that she'd injured her ankle. Her foot burned as if it had been dipped into hot wax and her toes pulsed with the unnatural rhythm of her heartbeat.

Olivia rubbed her ankle with one hand and pushed away the overgrowth with the other; scanning the area for intruders. The yard was deep and wide, backing up to a dense forest of white birch and pines. The forest appealed to Olivia who, had she been here as a child, would have imagined a troupe of cookie baking elves lived there, or a flitting group of colorful fairies dancing with the summer breeze. Now, however, grown and settled firmly in reality, the forest appealed as a means of escape. If she could make it into the forest, and keep her footfalls as silent as possible, she would follow the route she’d mapped in her head and make it to the highway on the other side. From there, she would hitchhike into Portland and, if she couldn’t find work there, she’d head down to Boston.

The crickets were loud, filling Olivia's ears so full that she didn't hear the backdoor open, or the footsteps behind her until it was too late. A large hand covered her shoulder; a deep voice slaying every bit of hope she had left.

"That’s enough running. Come with me.”

Don't Forget to Vote Today

NaBloPoMo

I missed the boat on NaBloPoMo, I guess. That night I was talking to you I should have been posting while I was on the phone, but I didn't. Oh well. Your internet is on now, right? Are you doing NaNoWriMo? You know I'm always happy to read anything for you if you want me to. :) I thought about doing it for about 3 seconds this year, but I'm just not in a very creative place right now. That's part of why I am not doing the blog thing, either. Lately it's been a struggle to come up with something interesting to blog about, much less write an entire novel. Anyhow, if you are writing, I just wanted to wish you luck and I'll know that's why I won't see you online much during the month of November. Tonight's the Bachelor. Are you watching? I'll try to call you on your home phone later.

Snoop Dogg & Dora

Today when I was at one of the daycares for storytime the kids were being especially funny. I bring them books and videos every month. This month I included A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and as the kids were looking through the book bag, one kid held it up and exclaimed, "Look! It's Snoop Dogg!" We giggled for quite awhile about that one. Then when we were making our Paper Plate Pilgrim People craft, the kids all mistook them for Dora the Explorer so for the next 5 minutes all I heard was, "I wanna make a Dora! I wanna make a Dora!" More giggles for us.

I Can't Decide if I'm Sick or Not

Last night, I was sure something was starting. I had the sore throat, and I was sneezing and my eyes were watering, so I took some nyquil before I went to bed and that did the trick for me. And this morning I woke up feeling great. Maybe just a touch of a scratchy throat, but that's it. I'm glad it has decided to hold off for awhile, but I hope I can just make it to the weekend. Really, I don't have time to be sick next week either. We've got tons of stuff going on at work right now and I need to be there every day. So I guess now I need to go into staying well mode. Wash my hands 50 times a day, drink lots of orange juice, and get lots of rest. No more staying up late on the internet. Hopefully that will do it.

Happy Halloween!

I missed the Bachelor again last night and I fogot to record it. Darn it! I was watching Bryson & Jackson and Desire got back later than I thought she would. Did you get those pictures that I emailed you yesterday? Can you believe how big they are? And you can actually have conversations with Jackson now, it is too cute!

Are you guys doing the trick-or-treating thing tonight? We aren't. I'm working til 8, so I'll be doing it at work, but Doug's not passing out any candy here, we didn't even buy any this year! So I made sure I told anyone who I thought would come by to trick-or-treat, to come see me at the library instead.

Anyway, I guess I better get ready for work now, even though I have a sore throat and feel icky. Talk to you soon.

Sleigh Bells Ring...

...I know, I know, it's too early for Christmas (it's not even Halloween, yet!), but I'm in a Christmas-y mood. Maybe because when I was at Wal-Mart the other day I heard a Christmas song and was inspired to put in a Christmas CD in the car. Or mabye I just feel like shopping. Who knows? All I know is that the closer it gets to Christmas the more excited I get. The downside to all of this is that I'll probably be sick of Christmas by the time Thanksgiving gets here. I have to remember, small doses of Christmas cheer go a long way! So what are you & Josh doing for the holidays? Any travel plans? What about Thanksgiving? Could I convince you to come for a visit?

Have you started any shopping yet? I haven't at all, but I want to! We're mostly just buying for Doug's niece & nephews and I don't want to get their stuff without him. I already know what I'm getting my mom & dad. We decided not to buy for siblings this year to save everyone some time & money and then all we have to get is my grandma, his grandma, and his parents. I was thinking I might make cookies, or something for friends and neighbors, but I haven't decided what to make just yet. I don't know yet if Doug & I are going to get each other gifts. I want to, but he doesn't. That's not true, last night he said we could get each other a big screen TV for Christmas. Like I really want a big screen TV. Riiiggghhht. Anyhow, I want to get you a Christmas gift, unless you are strongly opposed to it this year. I will totally understand. I know of a million things that I think you will love though. :) The only reason I mention it is because I don't want you to feel bad if I were to send you a gift and you didn't send me one, which is totally fine, btw. I know what that feels like and it is sucky. Then you end up getting someone a gift just for the sake of getting one. That's no fun. So let me know if you don't want to exchange gifts this year.

Bad Kitty!

I am so mad at Boomer right now! I just caught him in the kitchen sink, which is irritating enough on its own. It is even more irritating because that is where I had set out the roast to thaw for dinner tonight. I came into the kitchen to put away my lunch dishes and I catch him in there. I yell at him, and he picks up the roast (don't worry it was wrapped) in his mouth and jumps down and starts to run off. He didn't get too far and he dropped the meat and when I reach down to pick it up he tried to get it from me again! Okay, I had to smack his head at that point (I know, I'm a bad momma, but seriously!). It's not like he didn't have food, he had plenty of food. I just fed him this morning. Now he's in the basement and I know he's sitting at the top of the stairs because I can hear him meowing pitifully. Too bad! He's going to be down there for awhile.

Where'd you go last night?

I called while I was watching the Bachelor, but I didn't get a hold of you. First I thought you were trying to get me back for not being around to talk to you the last two weeks :D. Then I started thinking a little more logically, and figured you were probably busy or your phone was dead or something like that. It's okay. I watched most of it, but didn't watch "The most dramatic rose ceremony ever." It's not quite so dramatic now that he gives away roses on dates. Since I already saw him give away two of his 4, I figured I could spend the last 15 minutes of the show with Doug before he had to leave for work instead of wasting my time. I still need to look it up to see who got the other 2 roses though.

So have you guys started moving yet? How's that going? Do you like your new place? And please tell me you'll be getting internet access at home soon! You'll need to update me on your address, so that this year I can actually send you a Christmas card. :)

Have you been scrapbooking lately? Becky came over on Sunday to scrapbook, but I didn't get much accomplished. She took over most of the space because she was sorting pictures. I reattached a few things I had taken out of one of my albums and that was pretty much it for the day. I need to scrapbook the pictures I took when I visited you and now the trip I took to Hermann. I think I'm going to wait for my mom before I work on those. I don't even know what pictures she has. Actually, I need to consult your expertise on a picture issue I'm having. Someone took a picture of the 4 of us by a campfire and there is a smoke obscuring the picture, mostly my aunt's face. Is there any way to fix that? Otherwise it is a great picture. My favorite one of the whole trip actually. Here I'll show it to you.

I figured if anyone knew, you would. Okay, I guess I better get ready for work. I've got to run to the store and pick up a few things this morning. Talk to you soon!

I'm Back!!

We got home late Sunday night and I must say I had a pretty good time overall. First of all the Amtrak was so fun! I'd definitely take it again. Next time though, I'd make sure we were heading somewhere with some sort of public transportation or at least a place to rent a car. We walked everywhere all weekend, because that was pretty much our only option. Okay time for a recap:

FRIDAY

My mom & dad picked me up at 5:30 Friday morning, then we picked up my grandma and last, but not least, my aunt. We caught the Amtrak at Union Station and from there traveled to Jefferson City. In Jefferson City, we had to switch to a bus because they were working on the tracks. We arrived in Hermann, MO about 12:30 that afternoon. We made the long trek up a hill to our B& B only to discover that check-in isn't until 3:00 and the office is closed. We made a couple of phone calls and finally the owner found a place to store our luggage until check-in. Then we started walking. We headed to Simon's on the Waterfront for lunch. Yum! I had a pulled pork sandwich and french fries and I wasn't disappointed, of course I was also very hungry. We only had snacks on the train and even though my aunt brought stuff, after trying the "only 1 point" muffins, I decided to stay far far away from her snacks. Next we visited the Hermannhoff Winery. That was really neat. We tried a few different wines and bought a couple to take back to our room with us. It wasn't like a wine tasting you see on TV though. This was them pouring you a little plastic shot cup of wine and you drinking it. There was no smelling or swirling. Oh well. So after that and a quick walk through some shops we headed back to the B&B. It was still only 2:15, so we decided it was time to just rest. At 3:00 on the dot my aunt was checking us in. We had reserved a suite for the weekend, but the box-like room we were in could hardly be called a suite! There were two beds, a desk, a TV, a mini-fridge, & a bathroom. Everything was dusty, the lampshades fell off the first time we turned on the lamps and the carpet was disgusting. At that moment we decided to spend as little time in our room as possible. After putting our stuff in our "suite" we escaped for some shopping. We went to several different antique type stores. Some that were really cute and others that were just dusty and old smelling. And then we found the Good Buy store. I think it was a screen printing store, but they had several other things. Some just plain weird, but the clerk was a very sweet old lady who gave us our dinner tip for the night, El Ranchito for some yummy Mexican food and the best margaritas in town. I think they were the only margaritas in town, but oh well. They were still good. After dinner we headed back to the B&B for the nightly marshmallow roast. We met several of the other guests and stuffed ourselves with marshmallows and the wine we bought earlier that afternoon. Now, I know what you are thinking....margaritas, wine, & marshmallows?? YES, but it gets worse. After awhile we started to get bored so we put grandma to bed and headed to the local Eagles lodge. We had a couple beers and my mom & aunt played pool. It wasn't long before one of us started feeling bad, and it wasn't me for once. Unfortunately it was my mom. I think we overdid it. And that was pretty much the end of the night for us.

SATURDAY

The next day, my mom still wasn't feeling good so we let her sleep in and went over to the main part of the B&B for the wonderful breakfast. Long story short, breakfast sucked! After that is was time for more shopping. We headed back to one of the antique stores and I picked up a Christmas gift for my mom. It turned out to be a good thing that she wasn't there. :) Then we went back to check on her and she still wasn't ready to get out yet, so we headed to the Arts & Crafts fair. It was huge and there were a ton of people there. It probably took us 2 hours to get through it. I bought a Christmas ornament and some homemade jelly & mustard and my aunt bought us all cute keepsake things for the weekend. After the craft fair we headed down to the Pamida. My mom compares Pamida to TG&Y, if you remember those. Anyway, one of the guests at the B&B told us not to buy anymore wine at the wineries, because you could get it at the Pamida much cheaper. So we went and stocked up! By the time we made it back to our room, my mom was feeling better so we all headed to the Stone Hill Winery. It was a very long walk...we stopped several times for my grandma to rest (this was about the time we started cursing the lack of car rental services). We finally made it and were so hungry that we went straight to the restaurant, where they told us it would be an hour and a half to get a table. So we put our names in and headed to the gift shop for some snacks. My aunt & I also decided to take the winery tour and since my mom still wasn't feeling great offered to sit with Grandma. Of course, no sooner than we bought our tickets for the tour, they could seat us. It had only been half an hour. We were too hungry at that point, so we skipped the tour and had dinner. After that we headed back to the B&B and settled down to watch a little TV. The next thing I knew, they were all putting on their pajamas and by 7:30 all three of them were asleep. I tried staying up to watch TV, but my mom kept waking up and telling me to turn it down. When it finally got to the point that I couldn't hear it anymore I gave up and went to sleep too. It was 8:45.

SUNDAY

So then it should be no surprise to anyone that they were all up at 5:00 Sunday morning. I woke up about a quarter to 6 because they were all getting ready. So I took my turn in the shower and then we waited for 8:00 to get there so we could have breakfast. We were the first ones there. Breakfast on Sunday was much better. I think someone else did the cooking and we filled up on quiche, sausage, waflles, & cinnamon twists. Oh, and lots of strong coffee for me. After breakfast we checked out of our room & took my mom to the craft fair to show her what she missed she bought a couple of things and since we were there so early it only took us about an hour to get through. At that point we still had about 5 hours to kill before we had to board the train so we walked and shopped a litle more. We visited a candy store and picked up some yummy treats and then went to a coffee shop. It was about lunchtime again, so we went searching for something to eat and decided to head back up to the Hermannhoff Winery because they had some Oktoberfest activities that afternoon. Really, it was just a guy with an electric accordion playing some not very polka music. We had a nice lunch there. I had yummy potato pancakes. And then we left and walked some more! Finally we decided we were tired of walking and went back to the B&B, picked up our luggage and headed to the train depot. We sat & waited for about an hour. We finally boarded the train and were happy to find out that we wouldn't be riding a bus at all on the way back. We made it back to KC about 9:15 and I got home about 10:30.

I was still tired yesterday and I didn't do much of anything after work except a little bit of laundry and watched TV with Doug until he went to work. Then I went to bed too. I didn't even watch the Bachelor yet and I'm sorry that I missed your call. I really do need to talk to you. I just need to do it when Doug's not here and with him not going in until 9:15, it's makes it kind of late now. :(

So that was my trip. It was a nice weekend, but it's even nicer to be home! I'll post some pictures soon.

Funny...

I had a silly little conversation with Doug this morning when he was half-asleep. It went something like this:

D: "Where's my wife?" (groggily)

M: "You don't have a wife." (giggles)

D: "Okay, you'll do." (rolls over & goes back to sleep.)

Here's the picture I promised. :)

On October 1st I went to my very first Chief's game and we played the 49ers and won 41-0, it was great!

I heard it through the grapevine...

...okay, so really I heard it on myspace (Click it, there are pictures. I think you have to read the comments if you want any details, but you get the gist.) that a certain ex-boyfriend of mine and a certain former friend just had a baby a couple weeks ago. How did I seriously not know about this?? I knew they were pregnant once and miscarried, but within a few months they must have gotten pregnant again. No one said a word to me. Crazy. Anyhow, I thought I would be upset about it, but I think I'm more upset that I didn't know not about the who and how and why. Actually, after giving it some thought, I figure I'm to thank for this new baby's existence (why yes, I am conceited!). No seriously, we both know that if I had never gone out with him she wouldn't have given him a second thought. Right?

Anyway, sorry I missed you last night. I was working at the book sale from 5-9 and I forgot all about it being Bachelor night when I scheduled myself to work that time a month ago. I did record it and watched it when I got home. I really think Erica needs to go, don't you? She's starting to get on my nerves. And as much as I liked Lisa to begin with, I think she's getting a little too big for her britches. I still can't stand Desiree (baybee!). I know I had alot more to say on it, but that's the problem with not talking about it right when it is going on, I forget. :(

I haven't watched What About Brian yet, but it's waiting for me on the DVR. Hopefully I can watch it before I leave on Friday for our train trip. I'm so excited! I think Doug is even more excited though. He's already got his whole weekend planned. Lots of hanging out with Aaron and stupid horror movies that I won't watch with him and all that kind of fun stuff.

Oooohhh...do you know what I am craving? That macaroni & cheese I had at Noodles & Co. I looked it up and the closest one to me is in Overland Park. Hmm...guess what else is there? Sephora, and do you know what is at Sephora?? The BENEFIT counter! :) I think I need to go there very soon. I wish you were here and could go with me. It won't be the same without you. :(

Well, I guess I should go for now. I've got to get my clothes out of the dryer and then head to bed. It's finally cold at night and I'm loving sleeping in my flannel pj's and using extra blankets! I know I sleep so much better. And hopefully it'll freeze in the next night or so and kill the allergens. Then I'll be all set, but before I go I'll leave you with a picture, or not because it doesn't seem to be showing any. I guess I'll try tomorrow.

I got my haircut yesterday...

So what do you think? I even got swoopy, side swept bangs. :)

Craziness

Well, I'd be excited about it being Friday, but it looks like another quick weekend for me. Tonight I've got to clean my house because I would really like to sleep in tomorrow morning. I have a baby shower tomorrow afternoon and that night I'm having a Margarita Night at my house with some girls from work. Plus, I'm making enchiladas for that. I may get them ready Saturday morning, just in case I don't have time when I get back from the baby shower. Then on Sunday we are going to the Chiefs game. JT had tickets he couldn't use, so he gave them to Doug. It also just happens to be "St. Joe Day" on Sunday, so we are definitely going down to tailgate. That'll pretty much be the whole day. Then it will be Monday again and it'll feel like I didn't even have a weekend at all.

It's supposed to be in the 80's this weekend. I really am not looking forward to that. I haven't totally put away my summer clothes, but I'm about ready to. I have been wearing lots of sweaters though. Thank goodness for chilly mornings. The leaves are starting to change. I really want to get some pretty pictures this year, but it's not going to happen if I don't get out and take any. I'm hoping to get some nice shots when I go on that train trip with my mom.

I'm working by myself this morning and it is so quiet in here right now. I remember when this used to go on for hours at a time. I'm sure now that I have typed this I'll have at least 5 people walk through the door in the next 20 minutes. That would probably be a good thing since I am very tired and need to wake up. I feel like all I have to do is close my eyes for a second and I'll be out. I've been averaging about 6 hours of sleep a night this week and that is on top of taking allergy medicine before I go to bed. I really need to get to bed earlier when I do that. It has been so hard to get out of bed this week.

I finished a good book the other night. It was Between, Georgia by Joshilyn Jackson. Great book. I really do love southern fiction. I think her first book, Gods in Alabama, was better though. Right now I'm reading The Reading Group. I started it yesterday while I waiting on Doug at the dentist's office. I have put aside the Maeve Binchy for now. I think I'm going to take that on my trip along with Mason-Dixon Knitting and maybe something on my needles if I get inspired by this book.

Well, it's starting to pick up in here, so I'd better end this for now. Have a good weekend!

Grey's Anatomy

I'm sure you watched last night. I didn't realize that they were showing last season's finale Wednesday night. Thank goodness for DVR! Amanda & I watched both episodes back to back. I have to say, I was a little disappointed in the premiere. I think the best moment was Christina telling Burke not to die and the worst was a tie between George not telling Callie that he loved her too & McDreamy telling Meredith that he was in love with her. I was ready to throw things at my TV at that point. Poor Addison for finding Meredith's lost panties. I love how the thing with her telling the girls that the truth always comes out was a metaphor for her relationship with Derek. I also loved all the flashbacks. Those were great. Yay! I'm so excited it is back on TV. :)

Not Enough Hours in the Day

Is it just me, or does it seem like the older we get the less time there is to do things? Is it because I have so much more to do now that I have a home of my own? Or maybe it is just because my schedule is so screwy because of Doug's schedule? Probably a little bit of both, I'd have to say.

There is so much I want to do this weekend and I know that I won't even get through half of it. I got my first issue of Simple Scrapbooks this week (did you get yours?) and I have been poring over it. I really want to scrapbook now. Plus, I got all the stuff to start Doug's baseball album & to make him a shadow box the other day. So I'd like to get that done. And I need to do some serious filing and organizing around the house. Not to mention cleaning, laundry and all thos fun jobs. And if I can squeeze it in, I'd like to finish reading the book I started well before I came to visit you. Plus, tomorrow night is homecoming at LHS, so I told my mom I'd go with her. That'll be my whole evening. And I have a ton of shows recorded that I'd like to watch. I'm going to have to do some serious multi-tasking this weekend.

The Bachelor

So I think we should make Monday nights at 8:00 our weekly phone call night & time so we can watch The Bachelor together. What do you think?

Inspired!

I have been sitting here looking up scrapbooking layouts and now I am inspired! Why does my inspiration have to come to me while I'm at work for 6 1/2 more hours??? I'm jotting down ideas, so hopefully I'll be able to keep my momentum throughout the day. Housecleaning...was I supposed to do that tonight??? Hmm... :)

Check this out!

So I was looking around for some good sweater buys and came across this! Now, I know we probably aren't getting one in our mall, but I bet now I can use my penney's card for purchases! YAY!!!

*ETA: Nevermind, you can't use your penney's card. Boo!

Scrapbook Pages

Here are the pages I made last night.

This first one is titled "MOO." The journal box reads: "No trip to Wisconsin would be complete without cows & cheese! there were painted cows here & there all throughout Downtown Madison. We just couldn't resist taking a picture with them." The second page is titled: "friends to the end." The journal box reads: "Carmen & I sit by the Wisconsin Rive & wait for the tram that will take us to the Duck Tours. Wisconsin Dells, WI 9-2-06" Then I found these really cute stickers at Hobby Lobby. It says "Friend Facts" and it lists all the things that make up a friend, just like you would find on a package of food. Too cute! Here's a better picture of them (scroll down the page a bit). I also picked up the ones called "Cat Facts." :)
Sorry the quality sucks. I really need a scanner.

Pictures!

Okay, the pictures are in the mail. I went to the post office yesterday, so I hope they won't take too long to get there. I even managed to scrapbook a few of them last night. I went to Hobby Lobby yesterday and spent 45 minutes looking at the 3-D type stickers and embellishments. I did get a few, but none for the pages I did last night. They are so much more expensive than regular stickers!! I am happy to report that I used way more paper than I have ever used before though. :) I will try to take some pictures of the pages tonight so that I can show them to you. This is when I really wish I had a scanner!

Makeup

I know I was supposed to post this stuff last night, but I fell asleep. Sorry! So anyhow, I went back through and added a few (okay way too many) things to my wish list. I also came across this page and knew they were referring to us! :)

And here is my wishlist. I can't wait to see yours!

By This Time Tomorrow, I'll be at the Airport!

Okay, I pretty much packed everything last night, but now I think I may have overpacked. I definitely don't need 2 pairs of jeans and a pair of capri pants. I think I can get away with 1 pair of jeans and my capris since I am wearing jeans on the plane. And I think I've packed something like 7 shirts...what?? If I'm this well packed then I'll have no excuse to buy any new clothes when we're shopping. So I'll do a little reevaluating tonight. :) Do you think I still need to bring my swimsuit?

I Really Should Be Packing

I got Doug all packed tonight. Yes, that's right, I did it. He made me pack his suitcase because he claimed that the wouldn't do a very good job. Whatever. I still haven't packed my suitcase. Why not, you ask? Well, I don't really have a good reason. I just haven't. I'm going to go do that as soon as I'm done here...maybe. :) Anyhow, I think we need to make this on Sunday. It is apparently really, really good and I'm bringing the recipe with me. If we don't make it at least you'll have the recipe for future reference. Okay, I'll go pack now!

Two Things

1. I don't have any pickles and now I want some! :(

2. I found the post you were telling me about and you were right, it is dead on.

That is all. I'm going to bed now.

Itinerary

I emailed you my flight itinerary. Let me know if you didn't get it.

5 Days Left!

Okay, so last night Doug said we were each taking $200 out of savings for our trips. So maybe by the time we're ready to leave I'll have him talked into at least $250. :) I've got some spending room on my CC and I might try to get my limit increased before I go. Do you have a Penney's? Should I bring my CC for there?

I've been thinking about things to do while I am there and I was thinking about the crop thing. As much as I would love to go, I don't think I should be going to an event like this. I know how that goes with the whole try it and buy it thing. I'll end up loving everything I try and buying too much and be out of money the first night I'm there! I still want to go to the store though. I have to see what all the hype is about and I'm still up for scrapbooking if you want to do it at your house or something.

BTW, I told Doug that my vacation was going to be more fun than his. I know this is true because I already know what it's like just hanging out with you & Josh. I think Doug is in for it hanging out with Ronnie & Corey. Corey's not going to let them go off and do anything and if she does she'll be calling every half hour. Thank goodness, Josh isn't like that. Plus, we're actually going to go do things. Doug & Ronnie plan on drinking lots of beer and playing video games. Madden '07 came out this week. I suppose that will be fun for them. Oh well, to each his own, I guess.

I got a book to read on the plane. I decided just to check it out. We got new paperbacks in yesterday so I had my pick. It's not too long so I may need to stop at a bookstore before I leave to get something to read on the way home. Like you'll mind going to a bookstore!

Okay, I'm at work so I really should attempt to do something work related. I've also got to start making my list of what I'm wearing so I can make sure I don't wear it next week. :) See you soon!

My Kitchen is Almost Functional Again!

I painted tonight. I wasn't going to do it until tomorrow, but Doug was hassling me about it, so I just went ahead and decided to do it. It's not totally finished. There's still a section above the cabinets for Doug to do that I just can't reach, and probably a few spots to touch up when I see it in the light of day. I would say that the majority of it is finished though. I'm really happy with the color I picked. I'd show you a picture, but in the picture it pretty much just looks white. I'm sure there is some sort of setting I could use on my camera to make it not turn out that way, but I don't know what that is. If you want to see the color, you'll just have to come over in person or take my word for it. It sort of ended up being a light khaki color. Neutral enough to go with whatever, but not totally boring. Once the kitchen is actually put back together, I'll take some pictures and post them. I also would like to go and get a new kitchen table now. Doug & I picked one out a few months ago at the furniture store at the mall and we went and looked at it again tonight. We still really like it, but it is $339. Not quite in our budget at the moment. Maybe one day...
Okay, one room down, just 5 more to go (upstairs, anyway). I don't know what to do downstairs and I think I'm just going to let Doug worry about that for now. Okay, now I'm tired. Time to go lay in bed and watch Food Network. :)

Something other than dishes...

Here's a picture for you since you told me you like picture posts.

Me & Tess. I actually took this myself last night. Got it on the first try and everything. I tried to take more, but my camera wasn't cooperating and then Tess wasn't.

More Dishes!

I love these!!! They are on sale until the 2nd of October. I really really want them.

Too Cute!

I was looking at dishes again...I know, I know, I said I wasn't going to get any. It's like a sickness, I swear. Anyhow, I found these that would go so well with the shadowbox things I got and then there are these that I love just because. It would be hard to have to choose, that is for sure.

And I know you are set on Fiestaware for your kitchen, but are these not gorgeous dishes?? These would be nice in your kitchen too, I think.

I love these and these. These are also very cute!

Okay, I really have to stop now. I've got to eat my lunch and get ready for work.

New Perfume

Someone sent an email around a little bit ago about a new perfume they heard about on Nightline called "In The Library". I'm a little bit tempted to order a sample.

More on Fiestaware

Amanda & I went to Dillard's tonight to see the colors live and in person. Wow...what a difference. She was convinced the cinnabar was brown and it most definitely is not. And we didn't like the shamrock or the tangerine...ick. She didn't like the persimmon, but I did. Actually, it's one of the colors I'd use. If I were going to buy the dishes (which I'm not, I'm going to use what I have) I would buy sunflower, cobalt, cinnabar & persimmon. But like I said, I'm not buying new dishes. I did buy a a utensil holder at Target tonight though. Wanna see a picture??

Doesn't that look perfect with the canister? And they have a bunch of other matching pieces. A paper towel holder, napkin holder, spoon rest, trivets, & cookbook stand. They also had it in red, white, & black. It is metal, btw. Very heavy. I couldn't find it online, otherwise I'd send you a link. You'll just have to go to Target & look for yourself, I guess. :)

Anyhow, I better get to bed soon. I used some lavendar lotion a little bit ago and I actually think it is really making me sleepy.

Fiestaware

How about something like this? Wouldn't that work in my kitchen? I wouldn't want that exact set, because I don't really like the glasses and I definitely don't need any more flatware, but those colors are good. It doesn't have the green that is in my canisters, but I didn't like that green anyway. It was kind of icky. Besides I still have plenty of green going on in the kitchen. :) I shouldn't be in any big hurry to buy plates and stuff anyway because what I have already works with the cannisters. But I could still get some accessories, right? The more I look at the Fiestaware, the more I really like the cinnabar color. I almost wish I had seen that before, but I already bought stuff to decorate with, so I better stick with it. I just need to quit looking at other stuff.

ETA:
I forgot what you said about the sale that Macy's/Marshall Fields is having, but didn't you say something about it being buy 1 place setting, get 1 free and that 4 place settings was going to cost you $84 or something like that? Well...this is what they have at Dillard's and it appears to be regular price. I really do love the cinnabar.

Delivery

I was tracking your package and it said it was out for delivery from Middleton, WI. I hope you get it today!

Dishes

I was looking at those dishes again and I think you are right about the white. I think I'll go with my home & garden party dishes. I really do like those and I can't quit my theme halfway through, right?

Can't Sleep

I wonder if they have these at our Kohl's? Apparently you can't get them online, but they colors seem to match the tulip prints I bought for my bedroom. Hmmm...I might have to get to Kohl's soon. They are buy one get one free right now!

Pictures

Here is the best black & white of Boomer ever.

I love this picture of Tess that I took today.

Here I am right after I put on my makeup. What do you think of the mineral foundation?
Keep in mind that the lighting was very flattering in this picture. :)

Pillows

Here's those pillows I was telling you about.

Blogging from Fran's to Say...

That we bought a bed today! It's the first time since I was living with my mom that I've had a proper headboard and footboard. Hooray!

You can see a picture of it here. It's purrrrrty.

More Dishes!

Last night I was at Wal-Mart and noticed a set of dishes that looked alot like the Home & Garden ones that I want. Much cheaper, but probably not as good quality. But I got to thinking that just because I have canisters and stuff does not mean that I have to get everything to match it. So I have been looking around and I came up with these. They are cute and have the yellow & blue which I love and I think will really go with provencial look I'm going for in my kitchen. What do you think? Will they work?

3 Weeks and Counting

3 weeks from this minute I will be on an airplane on my way to see you! I cannot wait. Although, I must admit I'm getting a little nervous. Not so much about the flight, but about all the issues with your luggage now. No liquids or gels in my carry-ons? I guess I'll have to pack all my toiletries & makeup, which is no big deal. Unless my luggage gets lost. Then Doug can't say anything about how much money I spend if I have to replace all my makeup and perfume. And isn't bonus time coming up? Hmmm...maybe I should accidentally on purpose forget my makeup! :) Speaking of money, Doug told me the other night (without actually discussing it with me) that we were each only allowed to spend $150 while we were on vacation. Now, I'm sorry, but I'm going to be on vacation! And I'm saving lots of money by not staying in a hotel and staying in your guest room. I don't think $150 will cut it! I don't plan to go crazy, but I don't want to spend the whole time going "I don't think I can do that...I'm almost out of money" like I had to do when we were in Vegas. I must discuss this matter with him further. I will get my way. On that note though, if we could do some things that maybe weren't too expensive, that would probably be a good idea (although I guess shopping doesn't have to be expesive, but then it's no fun!). Really, I don't care what we do. We could sit around and watch movies or TV the whole weekend and I know we'd still have a ball.

Six Months Earlier - Part 1

The Stan Family Diner stood on the corner of Vine and Harbor streets, eleven blocks away from the slick storefronts of South Portland. It was a squat building that sat among old brick warehouses and was covered in cracked grey stucco, broken off in chunks around the foundation. The neon sign was turned off; an aura of abandonment surrounded the diner despite the brightly lit interior. Inside, Olivia drew stars on the window, her finger erasing the condensation that had formed by the violent polarity of toasty diner air and frigid December winds.

"So, let's see..." Olivia's grandmother, Camille, sat across the Formica table, a crisp map of Portland spread out in front of her. The corner of the map was discolored from Olivia's hot chocolate, which had spilled as the waitress sat it down in front of her. "If we go straight down Harbor, we can hit McLeod's first. That's the one Bess recommended." Camille traced the route with her long, thick fingernail.

"Can we see a movie after that?" Olivia asked. Camille hadn't yet realized it, but antique shopping really wasn't Olivia's thing.

"I don't know, Livy." Camille folded the map back up and stuck it in her purse, a massive beige tasseled bag with bulging pockets. Her grandmother's bag embarrassed her. Olivia looked down at her own purse, which she'd just begun to carry. It was small and dark, barely large enough for her wallet and lip gloss. Do purses just grow as you get older?

"The traffic will be bad tonight. Full of holiday shoppers. And it’s going to turn nasty. A nor’easter’s coming."

Olivia absently picked at the edge of the wood-grain Formica, trying not to be too disappointed. She wiggled one of her nails, chipped and half painted, under the laminate. Her grandmother seldom left the house, let alone drove all the way into Portland. Olivia's fifteenth birthday, though unfortunately positioned in the year, had been occasion enough to warrant a trip into the city. The laminate gave slightly under Olivia's finger, revealing a gummy black underside.

"I know! Why don't we decorate our tree when we get home?" Camille's voice warbled a bit, excitement laced throughout. Her Christmas bell earrings were heavy, elongating her earlobe. For the first time since they'd entered the diner, Olivia was aware of the tinkle of Christmas music, just under surface of the rowdy breakfast crowd. She glanced at the tiny tree sitting on a plastic stand near the cash register; a silver tinsel garland wound crookedly up its length, the red felt tree skirt holding fast to the creases created by eleven months of storage. It had been three years since Olivia had a Christmas tree. Her dad was almost never at home. After her mother walked out, he’d left it up to Olivia to decorate. She'd put the tree up twice before deciding it was a waste of time. No one was around to enjoy it anyway.

"Sure, gran." Olivia drained the last of the hot chocolate, tipping her mug to catch the concentrated chocolate puddle at the bottom.

Book Beginning

I was just remembering how I used to send snippets from my book along to you.

Here's how my book opens:

--------------------------------
The knock came at dusk.

Olivia had just settled down in her favorite chair, the one she'd patched with duct tape colored with markers to match the worn green leather. Her dinner, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, balanced precariously on the arm of the chair; a book was cradled in her bare legs.

The knock was sharp, rattling the old, warped glass in the front door. She knew without looking who it was. They had come without their lights and sirens, knowing that she would run.

The book slid from her lap, the sandwich flipped onto the floor. Olivia was halfway up the stairs before the second knock came. She'd been preparing for this for almost six months, since that horrible day in Portland. Her fifteenth birthday had been far from happy.

Olivia's bedroom faced the street and though the sun was fading, she didn't turn on the light. A buzz of voices from below floated up and were muffled by the window, shut tight despite the thick summer air. She knelt down, pulling the small suitcase from beneath her bed. Scattered pieces of cat food bit into her knees.

"Ziggy," she called in a whisper as she peeled the cat food from her skin. "Let's go, Ziggy."

Two yellow eyes followed by a shadowed body inched into the room, hugging the door frame. Ziggy always came when called - like a dog - but hesitantly, with a cat's suspicious mind. Olivia scooped him up before he could slink away. He resisted as she guided him into his carrier, landing one good scratch on the back of Olivia's hand before she latched the door closed.

Olivia rubbed the sting from the scratch. A deep voice called her name from the lawn below.

Across the room, the crystal covered box shone in what remained of the day's light, projecting muted ribbons of color along the wall. Olivia sat Ziggy down and hurried to the box. I wish I could take it, she thought. Covered with one-hundred and two perfectly cut teardrop chandelier crystals, the box was simply too heavy to add to her suitcase. Olivia lifted the lid and grabbed the money hidden inside, shoving it into the pocket of her shorts. Forty-three dollars and sixty-seven cents at her last count. It had been hard to save money; there had been so much she hadn't realized she would need.

The bedroom window shook in its casing. The pounding was louder now, less a suggestion and more a command. Beneath it all, the sound of splitting wood echoed.

"Help me!" Olivia thought as she raced through the short hallway, her narrow hips buffeting her suitcase and cat alternately. They hadn't been as patient as she'd hoped. She needed more time.

The rope ladder was hidden beneath a quilt at the bottom of the closet in her grandmother's room. A kaleidoscope of yellow and orange polyester, Olivia's grandmother had made the quilt at age twelve. The design was hand sewn, the irregular serpentine stitches still holding - regretfully, Olivia thought - after sixty years. As she threw back the quilt, Olivia's hurried heart shattered.

The rope ladder was gone.

Kitchen Plans

I started taking down wallpaper tonight. I was just kind of randomly tearing it off and some of it came off really easily. I think that I'm going to really work on it this weekend. Becky, Desire & Amanda have all volunteered to help. Should be a fun day. Hopefully I can get Doug to get the stuff above the cabinets though. And this table & chairs set is on sale this week and I really like it. It's a little darker than I would have liked for the kitchen, but I think it might be a nice contrast. Of course, that doesn't mean we will get it, but if I catch Doug in the right mood it could happen. Maybe we could at least put it on layaway. Even regular price it really isn't a bad deal. I think I need to go and at least look at it in the store. Or maybe I just need to start shopping the garage sales. That sounds like a better idea, otherwise I won't have any money to spend when I come to see you. :( I'm sad at the thought of no money, just so you don't think I'm sad about coming to visit.

24 (23 by the time you read this) days to go!! :)

Check Your Mailbox!

Okay, I'll let the cat out of the bag. I sent you some stuff. I know, I know. You didn't want me to send you anything, but I couldn't help myself. Consider it a belated birthday/thanks for letting me stay with you next month gift. It's not much, but I hope you will enjoy what I picked out. I will let you know what part of your gift is, because you probably won't be receiving it for awhile. It is a supscription to this magazine. It says that your first issue won't arrive until November or December though...boo! The other part of your gift should arrive in 5 to 9 business days, I think. I'll be tracking it, so let me know if too much time goes by. :)

Shopping...

I'm bored, so I thought I'd do a little window shopping. What do you think of this? I have a camisole I bought last year to wear with it and I already have the dark jeans...too cute, don't you think? I also love this dress and think it would be so cute to wear to work, if I ever wore a dress to work. Too bad it would probably need some serious alterations. I'd probably need some cute brown shoes to wear with it too. Oh the horror...pleated pants are back! And of course, I'll need new sweaters for fall...what do you think of this one (that's such a Carmen color...). And there's this one. And this one. And this one...I know, I know...enough with the cardigans. I can't help it, I work in a library, darnit! Okay, this one's not a cardigan. Neither is this one...very pretty. Anyway, I'm sure you're wondering what's with all the Penney's stuff...well I have this credit card with them and um...it's easier to use that then actually have to pay cash for it! Of course, I don't have to tell you that. :) They will definitely have to increase my limit if I want to buy everything I have picked out though, this is just a few select items. I definitely need new pants for fall and those are never fun to shop for. I'm not even sure what I have from last year that still fits. I've only been wearing like 2 pairs all summer. We get to wear jeans 2 days a week and I bought a bunch of capri's (okay like 3 pairs) this year despite Doug's disapproval. I need new shoes too. Although, I'll probably just head to Payless for those. I just don't understand spending lots of money on shoes. I love a cute pair of shoes as much as the next girl, but I think I like my money somewhere besides my feet. Oh, who I am kidding...I don't like to spend alot of money on any of my clothes! You know I don't buy anything that is not on sale. Speaking of which I was in TJ Maxx yesterday. Tons of cute clothes. I didn't look too much though. I didn't want to be too tempted to buy anything. I have to save my shopping money for BFW 2006. 29 days and counting!

Who Wants To See What Misty Got For Her Birthday??

These are the flowers Doug sent me for my birthday. He also made me breakfast this morning and took me out for Chinese food tonight. Sesame Chicken...yum!

A cute candleholder from my mom & dad.

And here are the canisters I asked for that they got for me.

And they gave me this book.

Here are the two Rooster prints I got at Michael's with the giftcard Sarah gave me.

Rooster 2

And this is the gift card Desire' gave me for a 30 minute massage. :)

And I still have more birthday presents to look forward to. I am going to order some dishes. I don't think I'm going to actually get the plates & stuff this time. It is too expensive. Plus, my plates that I already have match my canisters fairly well. I am going to get Salt & Pepper Shakers and Serving Bowls to match the cannisters though. Fun stuff.

So all in all, my 26th birthday has been pretty good. And it's not just because I got great presents. I just feel very loved this year. Does that make any sense? Here's to year 26, I hope it is the best one yet! :)

Sorry I missed your call last night. I was laying in bed watching TV with the door shut and couldn't hear the phone. :( And yes I did delete the post about Doug's mom. It was too whiny for me yesterday. We're going to dinner with her Thursday night so I'm sure I'll have a story to tell when that is over.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

so tired

I woke up at 3 this morning thinking that it was time for my alarm to go off and I could not get back to sleep at all. Not even for a few minutes. Thank goodness it is Friday. I don't think I could make it if it were a Monday.

Less Than 8 Hours To Go

We close at 4:00 today. I'm finally starting to get a little nervous. And I don't know what to wear! How does one dress to sign papers on their home loan?

Wednesday, July 26, 2006

So it looks like our closing costs will be minimal and we'll actually make the money back & then some because Desire & JT have to give us a check for $500. YAY! What that means for us is that there is a chance I can come to visit. Doug wants to go see his friend in Texas so it benefits him too. Here's the bad news though, now he says he may not want to go to Vegas. I told him about the issue with Josh's final so he thinks that we probably won't get to go. I really think he's doing it just because he has told too many people we might get married and now he has to cover his ass. I'm going to talk to him more later. He brought breakfast home for me this morning so he's got to be in some kind of good mood. Hopefully it'll all work out and we'll get to do everything we want to do.

I found the perfect vacation for us...

right here. Would that not be great and it is sponsored by your favorite store!

More Decorating

I think I'm going to use this stuff to decorate my kitchen with. It's 30% off this week, so I'll have to make sure I get out there and get it. I have already bought a sunflower plaque thing to go in the kitchen, but this stuff will still go because it has sunflowers & roosters. I'm trying very hard not to over do it though. I don't want anyone to think I have a collection going on. Otherwise I'll be stuck with sunflower/rooster stuff forever!

Living Room Color

Tell me what you think of the color of these bowls...I bought one today at Pier 1 because I think I might want to paint the living room walls this color. Neutral enough to go with our mismatched furniture. Then I'm thinking of adding bits of crimson here and there around the room for some pop. I already found a nice print at Michael's that I'd like to get when they go on sale. I figure if I want to do crimson now is the time to start looking because there is a ton of fall stuff with the perfect shade right now.

Random Things

We're closing on the house on the 27th now instead of the 28th. They couldn't get us in on the 28th, so they changed it. Fine with me, I don't mind doing it a day earlier. It is one less day I have to think about it. It really is kind of surreal though. Especially since, no real money is changing hands. Oh, I know it is real money, but you know what I mean. I have to find out for sure how much we will need at closing so we can get that ready, but I know it won't be much. Crazy, isn't it?

I talked to Angela last night. I wish I talked to all of you more often, now when we talk it feels like we have to have these marathon conversations to make up for all the time we didn't talk. Oh well. I think we're going to do something in a couple of weeks, so that'll be fun.

Are you on myspace? I've searched for you & Josh but didn't find you, so I'm assuming not. Anyhow, yesterday I had a message from my friend, Andrea. You remember her right? The boy-crazy one. Yes, it's all coming back to you now, isn't it? Anyhow, she's in the process of getting divorced right now, so I guess she's looking for a new guy and she had some kind of racy pictures on there. Too much information for me. I guess I'll just avoid the pictures section from now on.

Today's my day off. I have to go to the insurance company to get a bill for our first years homeowners insurance and then get the information to Cassie. Then Becky & I are going shopping. Then later this afternoon I'm taking my grandma to the doctor, so I've definitely got a full day. I should be home all evening though if you feel like doing any planning.

New Website

Here is my new favorite website. Right now I want to get some curtains they have in there. If you do some searching they are cotton canvas panels with grommets. So neat. Eric & Becky have them in their living room and kitchen and they look so good. I'm not sure what color yet, it'll depend on what paint colors we choose. Decorating & shopping for decorating stuff is so much fun!

Tuesday, July 18, 2006

Okay, the appraiser left a little bit ago. She really didn't look around too much, but I'm still glad I cleaned the house some.

Monday, July 17, 2006

Where are you?

I just called and got your voice mail, I think. Where are you? You're forcing me to clean my house now (well when I'm done posting anyway). The appraiser lady is coming at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. Doug & I cleaned right after I got off work today, but I still need to wipe off the countertops, swiffer the kitchen & bathroom floor and clean the bathroom sink & toilet. Hopefully she won't look in the shower. I don't feel much like cleaning that at the moment. I guess I'll go and do the easy stuff real quick and then try to call you back.

Decorating Ideas

This is what I'm using as a starting point for decorating my kitchen. What do you think? The picture is a little fuzzy, but you get the idea. Actually, if you go here and look under "Stoneware," you'll see the whole collection. It is called "Welcome Home." It's more expensive than what I initially planned to spend, but I love it. And I think it'll work well with the green countertops and floors, don't you? I'd like to paint the wallls that same yellow or a warm beige, I just hope it won't be too much. I'd love to do a faux textured finish. Maybe I should see if Home Depot or Lowe's has any classes coming up...
